State Inpection FAQs

We are licensed by the state of Texas and regulated by the Texas Department of Public Safety,
our inspection license number is 1P36566.
Therefore, we have to comply with the inspection process as defined by them and cannot deviate.
Below, we listed a few of the common questions we get throughout our day. Hopefully you will
find them helpful.

Q: How much do state inspections cost?
A: A safety only inspection includes diesels, motorcycles, and vehicles under 2 years or over
24 years old...the cost is $14.50. Most vehicles fall in the safety and emissions category
and the cost is $39.75.

Q: If my car fails, how long do I have to fix it?
A: You have 15 days to get the car repaired and get one free re-inspection.
However, this does not prevent you from getting a ticket for an expired inspection
sticker.

Q: What can I do if I disagree with the inspection process or results?
A: You can contact the Texas DPS Motor Vehicle Inspection Service at 817-299-1472.

Q: My windshield has a crack in it, will this fail inspection?
A: A simpe crack will not fail inspection. The rule is the wipers must maintain good,
constant contact with the windshield so a crack will not fail.
However, a large "spider" crack which impairs the drivers vision will fail?

Q: My taillight has a hole in it, can I use red tape to seal it?
A: No...the Dept. of Public Safety (DPS) requires you to replace the whole lens.

Q: Will a check engine light make my vehicle fail inspection?
A: On 1996 and newer vehicles the answer is yes. Those vehicles have sensors and computers that
constantly monitor the engine performance and emissions systems. Therefore, if the light is on,
it is an indication that the vehicle is emitting excessive emissions into the environment.
If your car is 1995 and older, the light will not necessarily indicate a failure. We are
required to run the car on a dynamometer and a sniffer in the tailpipe to measure emission output.

Q: Will disconnecting my battery to turn off my check engine light allow my car to pass inspection?
A: No, disconnecting your battery or resetting your computer will cause your systems to enter a
"NOT READY" status. This requires your car to complete a drive cycle....more often than not
your check engine light will come back on before it completes the drive cycle and enter a "READY"
status.

Q: How dark can I tint my windows?
A: Legally there must be 25% light transmission, however state inspection only require 20% light
transmission. There is no specification on rear windows. Food for thought, if your car passes
inspection for window tint, a state trooper could possibly still ticket you based on the 25% rule.

Q: My inspection sticker was accidently scrapped off while changing my registration sticker, can you
issue me a new one?
A: No, a new sticker can only be reissued from a Waiver/Challenge station, which is at the Irving
DPS office. For address and cost call DPS at 972-251-2404.

Q: Do you inspect Motorcycles at your location?
A: Yes...we welcome all types of motorcycles and scooters.
